10 Feb 60 Minutes Of Chill, Part 41: Vangelis – The Tegos Tapes Mix (Part One)
This time I´m proud to present you a true rarity, when it comes to electronic music:
Back in the 1990s Vangelis created a soundtrack for surgeon tapes lessons for a friend of him (Dr. Tegos), in order to make these lessons less monotous (12 hours of lessons …). There are many sources where you can find rough bootleg cuts of these sessions but none of them came close to an audio experience, being worth to mention when it comes to the music of Vangelis.
Also, there are no plans so far – by Vangelis himself – to create an official edit of this music and I fear that such a release won´t be realised at all. For a long time I was looking for fine sound examples of these sessions, and just about one month ago I read an article on synthopia.com where Neville Dorington (co-host of the Ultima thule ambient radio show in Australia) uploaded a great edit on soundcloud of most of the music Vangelis wrote for his friend.
What you are about to listen to are edits of the music from the tapes that doesn’t include any medical voice overs. (It contains music from the edits of „Case 01“ to „Case 14“). I hope you enjoy this first part of my 2 hour presentation of these rare ambient moments by Vangelis. Listening to this exceptional music you will find pieces which almost sound like a new Bladerunner soundtrack, some parts remember me on his early records like „Heaven And Hell“ some like altered version of his records in the late 90ies („The City“).
The original VHS box set includes a book which opens with a quote from Vangelis himself:
“Every human being, animal, plant or mineral carries the imprint of the cycle of Creation. Sound has always followed the sequences of change in this cycle, like a code carrying the function and dimension of the universe, being at the same time its generator. Let us go deep into our memory (and remember), by doing this, we will be able to decode the code of the Creation of the universe and, therefore, our own. What an extraordinary and divine key is music!” – Vangelis
